Managing People and Organisations

This Unit will introduce the nature of work organisations, approaches to management and leadership and factors affecting individual and team performance. It should provide you with an understanding of the theories behind management, organisation and employee performance and how you should apply these theories to organisational situations. The basic nature and functioning of work organisations will be explained and you will examine different approaches that may be used to improve individual and team performance through effective leadership and management.

Outcomes 1-3 will be assessed in controlled conditions by three separate assessments. Each will contain a number of structured questions covering the nature of organisations, motivation and job performance as well as the role of management and leadership in organisations. You will be successful in each assessment if you obtain 50% or more of the available marks.

Outcome 4 will be an open-book assessment that requires you to prepare and present a solution to a work organisation problem. You will probably present your work in a report which will be 1,500-2,000 words in length, excluding appendices. You will be given approximately four weeks to research and prepare the report.
